Synopsis

The day before the Christmas party, Kelly Hu, a single Chinese mother, decorates the home alone after failing to reach a consensus with her CBC partner. In the moment when Kelly feels the urge to assimilate into the new town, she makes a decision for herself.

Director’s Notes

Can a woman balance her own pursuits and motherhood in a foreign country? Can a mother prioritize her own life, even if it’s against the wishes of her daughter?

Growing up in a small city entrenched in traditional values, where each generation's path in life followed a similar trajectory centred around family as the cornerstone of everything, my perception of family structures, marriage dynamics, and relationships underwent a transformation upon my family’s relocation to an immigrant country. It was there I encountered women who defy conventions and take the lead in their own lives.
